Yering Station Winery: Matt’s Bar
Yering Station is in the Yarra Valley, which is about 45 min outside Melbourne, Australia.
History: Yering Station is actually the oldest winery in the state of Victoria with the grapes being planted in 1850’s. By 1890, Yering Station’s wine was already famous around the world with 14 medals in international competition and winning the only ‘Grand Prix’ award in the Southern Hemisphere. Also, ‘Yering’ is the original Aboriginal name for the land and the owners decided to keep it when they bought the property.
Yering’s main facility is pretty incredible complete with majestic views of the valley, perfectly trimmed hedges, fountains, statues and manicured grass. Almost feels like a fancy estate. It looks brand new with room for hosting large parties, a beautiful lookout deck, wine cellar, and restaurant.
However, my favorite part of Yering Station was the historic winery that was constructed in 1859 and is still standing. It has the original exposed brick walls and beautiful wood rafters. There is also a private tasting room in the upstairs loft called ‘Matt’s Bar’ which may be another reason I liked this area the best. Lastly, they have some cool farm to table products in their front room that were unique and looked delicious, such as homemade honey, chocolate covered coffee beans, etc. If I had room in my suitcase, I would have purchased at least a couple things. Great winery experience, even for the casual consumer.
As I mentioned in my last post, the Yarra Valley is mostly known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Shiraz. Yering Station was no different. Here are my favorites:
2015 Village Chardonnay – Hints of sweet pear on the nose and relatively fruity on your first taste with a crisp, mineral finish. Good day-drinking Chardonnay that seems to get better with every sip and would be refreshing on a hot summer day.
2014 Village Pinot Noir – Classic Yarra Valley Pinot. Smells like dark cherries and tastes a bit like them too. A little bit heavier than the other Pinot Noirs we had in Yarra, but I liked the bolder taste. Solid wine that I picture being paired with a hearty meat dish.
